FIG. MULTI PLATE CLUTCH

CONSTRUCTION OF MULTI PLATE CLUTCH:-

  1. multi plate clutch has more than one clutch plate known as metal plates  and also it consist of number of outer plates known as friction plates.
  2. Friction plates are slides and engages by means of slots on the cover which is bolted to the flywheel.
  3. A pair of lining made of an asbestos based material is riveted to the both the side of clutch plate and clutch plate is sandwiched between two friction plates in multi plate clutch.
  4. The inner splines of clutch plates are fitted on the splined hub. They also slides on the splined hub.
  5. Trust spring push the plates together to form a drive.
  6. The size of clutch plates is small as compared to single plate clutch which makes clutch plates compact.

WORKING OF MULTI PLATE CLUTCH:-

  1. When clutch is in engage position, clutch plates are gripped between friction plates with the help of thrust spring also known as pressure spring.
  2. All the plates pressed together causing to rotate at same speed
  3. The drive is transmitted from flywheel to outer plates then outer plates or friction plates to clutch plates and finally it transmitted to clutch shaft.
  4. As shown in fig. clutch is in disengage position, When pressure is applied on the friction plates with help of push pedal.
  5. Clutch plates and friction plates gets separate from each other so that clutch plates rotate separately due to inertia and then stops.
  6. thus clutch gets disengage so drive is not transmitted from friction plates to clutch shaft.

ADVANTAGES OF MULTI PLATE CLUTCH:-

  1. Multi plate clutch is compact in size due to contact area of clutch plate is divided into number of clutch plates.
  2. Multi plate clutch increases power transmission capacity in the given compact size.

APPLICATIONS OF MULTI PLATE CLUTCH:-

  1. Multi plate clutch is used in scooters , motorcycles, and high performance racing cars where available space is limited.
  2. I n two-wheeler available space is limited hence multi plate clutch is used in two-wheeler.
